Busy with some chores, I couldn’t allow the usual time for films and shows the last weekend. That’s why I missed watching the latest American rom-com, A Tourist’s Guide to Love.

The film is streaming on Netflix with a run time of one and a half hours. The platform describes it as a feel-good, charming, and romantic movie, over and above it being a comedy.

So, while I might be late to the party, my A Tourist’s Guide to Love review is definitely going to help those watching it at a later stage.

Here I go…

A Tourist’s Guide to Love Synopsis

A travel executive goes to Vietnam as an undercover to analyze whether a forthcoming business deal would benefit her firm.

There, she meets a free-spirit tour guide who shows her the other side of life.

Starring Rachael Leigh Cook (Amanda), Scott LY (Sinh), and Ben Feldman (John) in lead roles, A Tourist’s Guide to Love is directed by Steven Tsuchida.

What Works for A Tourist’s Guide to Love?

It has a pleasantly amusing storyline. For a rom-com, staying grounded is as important as flying around in serene joyousness.

A Tourist’s Guide to Love mainly depends on the impending heartfelt emotions. It capitalizes on casual conversations, individual bonhomie, and the travel feast.

Visuals from Vietnam are soothing to the eye. They make for an eye-catching experience. Furthermore, the heartwarming screenplay thrusts A Tourist’s Guide to Love forward.

Notably, the on-screen visuals don’t scream for attention. You are naturally glued to them. The makers have distanced themselves from vague twists.

It allows the movie to remain steady and grounded.

Moreover, the romance quotient is subtly stitched into the tale, adding the required sentimental value.

How do the Lead Actors Perform?

Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda is endearing in A Tourist’s Guide to Love. Her quiet demeanor, flawless dialogue delivery, and her innate ability to own the screen are blessings for the Netflix film.

She relies on the held-back expression of emotions. And unless there is a touch of dexterity while doing the same, one cannot succeed. However, she masters it brilliantly.

The charming Scott LY plays Sinh in the movie and throws a spell of innocence to win over the audience. His naïve mien is the most affable part of A Tourist’s Guide to Love.

Scott appears as a normal bystander and in the very next second, goes on to become the primary subject of the scene. That’s his beauty in adapting and adjusting as per the requirements.

What Doesn’t Work for A Tourist’s Guide to Love?

Well, for one, the concept of A Tourist’s Guide to Love is outdated. Almost every second rom-com on Netflix has a similar idea.

It simply doesn’t infuse enough freshness in the minds of the viewer. I only watched it because I like romantic comedies.

Had I thought of novelty, maybe, fifteen minutes into A Tourist’s Guide to Love and I would have shut it down.

Secondly, the film isn’t comical enough. More one-liners or comedy scenes were needed to save the ship.

Even the conversations between the lead pair could have been laced with humor, considering the genre of the movie.

There might be times when you would find A Tourist’s Guide to Love a tad boring. Unless you have patience, it could become tough to endure.

Should you stream or skip A Tourist’s Guide to Love?

You can stream it for romance minus comedy. The movie is definitely not the wholesome package of entertainment that we usually seek from a romantic comedy.
