A new Korean drama, The Sound of Magic, began streaming on Netflix recently. The show has several extravagant scenes and cute moments, which was obvious considering it revolves around teen life.

Moreover, the show’s theme of magic grips the audience like a vice (don’t get me wrong, it’s just an allegory). I recently wrote a review of The Sound of Magic, but the presence of several amusing moments in the series has forced me to bring about this blog.

Since there are a number of fantastic scenes in The Sound of Magic, I am bound to miss many of them. However, just as you have done in the past, leave a comment listing your favorite scenes from the show so that I can include them in part two.

*And yes, this blog contains spoilers.*

Yoon Ah-yi meets Na Il-deung

Best moments and no mention of first meetings will be a sure-shot injustice. Before jumping to the scene, let me first give you a context of how it panned out.

Context

It is the first day of school and, unfortunately, Yoon Ah-yi is late. She decides to run through the staircase to make up for the time. However, her quick steps lead to a crash with another student, who comes dashing from the other direction.

Due to the collision, Yoon Ah-yi falls down and hurts her knee. Also, her tights receive several tears.

The Moment

Yoon Ah-yi is sitting on the stairs, checking the wound. That’s when a student, Na-Il-deung, comes and picks up her bag that had tripped away due to the collision. He passes the schoolbag to Yoon Ah-yi, who thanks him in return.

The best part of this scene from The Sound of Magic comes when Na Il-deung offers a hand to Yoon Ah-yi to help her stand. However, she doesn’t look at him and gets up independently. The boy quietly redacts his arm and acts as if nothing happened.

For me, it was a moment full of innocence, where the child-like fantasy of making a friend on the first day of school took center stage. Also, I could gather the purity in Yoon Ah-yi’s character when she didn’t swear on the guy who bumped into her.

There’s one thing I want to ask you: How many of you initially thought that Na Il-deung was the magician or at least related to him? I sure did.

Yoon Ah-yi Runs Away Seeing the Magician

Well, this is again about the first meeting of two characters, Yoon Ah-Yi and the magician.

Context

After having a tough day at school, Yoon Ah-yi toils hard at her new workplace, a general store. Though she had gone there to work only for a day, at the end of the shift, the shop owner agreed to Ah-yi’s request to become a regular employee.

Moreover, he pays Yoon Ah-yi 50000 wones for the day.

The Moment

Having received her payment, a happy and joyous Yoon Ah-yi is on her way back home. While at it, she is planning how helpful the money would be in purchasing daily essentials like wheat, rice, eggs, etc. But she doesn’t know what’s coming her way.

Suddenly, the currency note in her hand flies away mysteriously. She walks up the stairs to pick it up, but the note flips further afar as soon as she bends down. Yoon Ah-yi runs miles behind the cash to capture it but to no avail.

She enters a dilapidated Amusement Park in the quest to get her hands on the note. It was then that the paper money flew for one final time before resting in the hands of a mysterious man, dressed as a magician.

Yoon Ah-yi is tensed, feared, and worried upon sighting the stranger. Sitting on the park fence, the alleged magician gazes at the cash and then utters five words to the girl, ‘do you believe in magic?’ and that’s it. Now, Yoon Ah-yi, like any other typical teenager would do, screams loudly and runs away from the site.

She keeps shrieking all along the way and stops only after reaching home. Wasn’t that something for a first meeting?

I felt the makers sort of successfully laid a red carpet to welcome the magician’s character. Had there not been an element of fear in the narration, who knows, the show might have failed to engross us in the first place.

Yoon Yoo-Yi had Three Bowls of Jajang Rice

A primary feature of The Sound of Magic is poverty. Yoon Ah-yi, who once lived a decent life with her parents, has to now look after her sister, Yoon Yoo-Yi, on her own. This is after her parents separated due to differences.

Context

Yoon Ah-yi runs back home in a distressed state upon seeing the magician, where Yoon Yoo-Yi greets her with a hug. The elder sister apologizes for being late and asks Yoo-Yi if she was scared alone. They have a small conversation, and Yoo-Yi notices the gash on her sister’s knee.

Afterward, Ah-yi tells her younger counterpart that she lost her hard-earned fifty-thousand wones.

The Moment

Yoon Ah-yi rightly assumes that Yoo-Yi must be hungry, and therefore, both proceed inside to have their dinner. The elder sister directly goes into the kitchen to check the food stock. She opens the fridge, but it is empty; the kitchen shelves have nothing inside them either; there are no snacks too.

While Ah-yi is busy searching for eatables, Yoo-Yi, who is standing behind, says that she had 3 bowls of Jajang rice at the school, and hence, she wasn’t hungry.

Hearing that her sis had three bowls, Ah-yi is visibly shocked and, understandably so, she asks whether Yoo-Yi was indeed full. The latter replies that eating three times a day has the same calories as eating all at once.

The responses from Yoo-Yi were so sweet and full of maturity. Though she was hungry, learning her sister had lost her hard-earned money and then witnessing Ah-yi’s struggle to find food in the kitchen, she lies about having eaten three bowls of jajang rice at school.

Her behavior was sensitive and that of a level-headed person instead of a child under ten years of age. Maybe, when we go through extreme situations, we learn life the hard way and that is what shapes our mentality.

I loved Yoo-Yi throughout the show. Didn’t you?

Bubbles, the Magician, and Yoon Ah-yi

Context

After losing her 50,000 wones, a resolute Ah-yi decides to search for it at the amusement park the next night. But once again, she spots the mysterious magician who jumps out of a ride and spreads his arms to welcome her. Yoon Ah-yi is feared and perplexed; however, not as much as last night.

Since the magician had unwantedly frightened Ah-yi in their first meeting, he decides to pay her back for the same by playing magic tricks for her.

The Moment

Firstly, he puzzles her by putting the invitation card inside her pocket from afar. Then he does a trick using a similar-looking currency note that Ah-yi had lost. Though the magician offers her two notes to cover the loss, the bemused teenager takes only one and decides to walk back home. The magician asks her to stop and bends down to tie her shoelaces tightly.

Thereafter, without wasting a second, Ah-yi starts running briskly. But she witnesses something peculiar and stops in a confused state of mind. There are bubbles flying in her proximity, and upon looking around for more insights, Ah-yi finds the magician sitting at the fence.

He blows additional bubbles using his hands to immerse the girl in a picturesque environment. Don’t you think the magician used the best thing to make Ah-yi comfortable? I mean, who doesn’t like bubbles? I sure do.

Even though she finds it hard to believe, Ah-yi is mesmerized by seeing a plethora of bubbles chilling in front of her eyes.

What I specifically loved about this scene from The Sound of Magic was the visually appealing atmosphere the makers were able to create. Two strangers in the middle of the night and bubbles flying around them like glowworms. Too beautiful to resist.

The Magician Saves Yoon Ah-yi

Context

Ah-yi’s employer offers her food to eat for the night. Thinking of him as a decent man, she tells him about their financial condition and asks for advance payment. To put things in perspective, Yoon Ah-yi also narrates how she manages things alone in the absence of her parents.

From her dad’s toy company going bankrupt to the fact that he would never come back home, Ah-yi opens herself in front of her employer. The man eventually agrees to pay her in advance, and she begins to admire him even more.

The Moment

Seconds after agreeing to an advance payment, the employer shows his real face where he turns out to be a pervert, eyeing to exploit Ah-yi by posing a monetary burden on her. He hugs the girl and starts touching her inappropriately.

Anyone in such a situation would feel rattled and uneasy. Yoon Ah-yi starts crying as the man forces himself upon her. The dimly lit environment adds further to the already tense setting. He has almost grabbed her with sighs of agony combined with Ah-yi’s unsuccessful efforts to push him away, taking centerstage.

There’s no chance of the girl getting away from a man who is not only physically strong but mentally corrupt (allegory). However, suddenly, out of nowhere, the friction comes to a halt, and Ah-yi pushes him to the ground.

He is now baffled about how could a teenage girl push him and begins abusing Ah-yi. Not only that, but he also threatens to lodge a police complaint against her for hitting an adult. Warning the girl of dire consequences, the man holds her by the neck and almost chokes her.

That is precisely when our stylish and mysterious magician makes a grand entry with his broad shadows moving slowly toward the two objects in action. Pounding heartbeats and the galloping fear of being forced into compulsion overwhelm Yoon Ah-yi as the man in front raises his hand to land a blow on her face.

But guess what; our wizard grabs his arm and puts it down. All this to the astonishment of Ah-yi, who is standing perturbed, trying to hold her breath. When the pervert asks the sorcerer his credentials, he again utters the cryptic words, ‘do you believe in magic?’

The man is visibly confused about what he just heard and asks for an explanation, but it’s too late as the magician is ready to cast his disappearance spell. A bit of Annara sumanara and boom! He vanishes into the wind.

I consider this among the best scenes from The Sound of Magic because of the comfort it provides to the anxious Yoon Ah-yi at the end. She needed a shoulder to cry on, a friend to talk to, and, probably, someone she could confide in. At that point in time, the Magician seemed to be ticking all the boxes.

The Butterfly Sparkles and Creates a Spectacle

Context

Yoon Ah-yi meets the magician at the Amusement Park. This time, she is more comfortable around him, and she even enjoys a drink offered by the wizard. They share a healthy conversation, and Ah-yi asks some of her doubts regarding the magic spell he did on her employer.

The Moment

While talking, the teenager tells the magician that there is no such thing as real magic. But the guy reminds her how she used to believe in magic when she was a kid. However, Ah-yi replies, saying she is grown up and there are responsibilities to look after.

Further, the magician wonders why people can’t believe in stuff like Santa Clause and magic after they grow a bit older. But an emotional Ah-yi tells him how tough it is to sustain regularly when you are young and on your own.

She talks about how people like her dad show dreams to their children but fail to even stay by their side. As tears roll down her cheeks, Yoon Ah-yi turns back and starts walking. But hearing the magician’s enigmatic words, ‘do you believe in magic,’ she stops and angrily tells him that she doesn’t believe in any freaking thing like magic.

Almost in an irate state, she once again strolls back. But is that it? Obviously, no! The magician casts another spell, preceded by the cryptic declaration, Annara sumanara. As a result, his butterfly-shaped locket sparkles, and the moment he lends his arm forward, a gorgeous butterfly makes her way to Yoon Ah-yi.

Soon, the fly invokes life into the dreaded equipment at the amusement park. Wherever she goes, whatever she touches illuminates like a beautiful lantern. Then the butterfly multiplies into many, and the entire amusement park is back in action again.

A song plays in the background, and the magician takes Ah-yi into a dreamland of only positive vibes.

My inclination toward this moment from The Sound of Magic comes from the aesthetics it brings along. The butterfly looks astonishing, and the way it travels across the park feels truly magical. I forgot my miseries for a brief moment and began enjoying what was playing on the screen.

Isn’t that the magic of storytelling?

Conclusion

I know you know that all the above scenes from The Sound of Magic belong to the first episode. There’s no doubt that the series has countless moments that I have not mentioned here.

I did it to avoid making the blog too lengthy. Instead, I will come up with a few more blogs (if needed) to cover the best scenes from The Sound of Magic holistically.

Moreover, I hope to find solace in your suggestions which you can drop in the comments section. Feel free to communicate if you want me to bring out the best scenes from one of your favorite shows (not yet covered elsewhere on the internet).
