Good web shows are becoming a rare commodity, and it has all come down to creating a triumphant legacy as a franchise. Breathe: Into the Shadows first streamed on Amazon Prime Video in July 2020. The show was able to create a name for itself thanks to another series that was released in 2018.

It was like a crossover, where the characters from Breathe (2018) were retained with their backstories, and a novel premise was created in the form of Breathe: Into the Shadows (2020) with a new protagonist.

Though Breathe (2018) was loved by one and all, Breathe: Into the Shadows (2020) received mixed reactions. However, the idea and presentation of the latter were superior when compared to the former.

Now, in November 2022, the second season of Breathe: Into the Shadows has begun streaming on Prime Video. It promises to take you on a thrilling ride once again. Moreover, the show has eight episodes lasting almost six hours.

Here’s my review to help you decide whether it deserves your time or not.

Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2 Review Summary

Suspense, thrill, and mystery are again at full display in Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2; however, the trite concept plays spoilsport.

Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2 Synopsis

J, the Ravan killer, is out on the loose again. He has only one goal: to finish what he started years ago. Can he get rid of all the ten heads of Ravan? Or will Kabir Sawant be able to stop him again?

Directed by Mayank Sharma, Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2 stars Abhishek Bachchan (Avinash and J), Amit Sadh (Kabir), Nithya Menon (Abha), and Naveen Kasturia (Victor), among others in lead roles.

What Works for Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2?

Plot

Keeping up with the first part, the plot of Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2 is engaging. It keeps you hooked by giving the baton to the antagonist. The show does seem too superficial at times, especially during the first two episodes. However, once you okay the idea, Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2 becomes viable for the major part.

Intriguing Screenplay

When suspense meets thrill in a crime show, all you need to go with the flow is a scintillating screenplay. Season two of Breathe: Into the Shadows piques your curiosity by building a high-pitched screenplay having the correct elements. All the flashbacks, mind games and mysteries lead the viewer into continuous watching.

Suspenseful

Even though several exaggerations drag this Amazon series down, it still has a lot of agog to offer. The show hones the cat-and-mouse chase between the cops and the criminals. Furthermore, out of everything there, Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2 finds a unique way to kill every time. You will wait for what happens, when it happens, and how it happens.

Decent Performances

One extremely dicey part of Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2 is its set of lead actors. Though a wonderful performer, Abhishek Bachchan fails to stay consistent in the show. He seems to be putting in a lot of effort to sumptuously portray a split personality. However, in the process, Bachchan does more harm than good to his talent. He is intermittent and aces the character only in bits and pieces.

Amit Sadh as Kabir Sawant continues from where he left in the first season. Playing a disoriented cop who is burdened by sin, Sadh keeps the intensity alive. He is sharp and provocative yet mindful of his actions. On the other hand, you won’t find him overdoing anything.

Naveen Kasturia plays Victor in Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2. He is a new entrant in the show and completely mesmerizes you with his act. Probably, he is the only untainted shining light of the series despite the presence of heavy players. His unnerving demeanor brings several enjoyable moments to the screen.

Nithya Menon, as Abha, is decent. She doesn’t get to do much in the show. Uplifting her character could have added more layers, but the makers may have had a different point of view. Nithya’s emotional appeal is at the core of many scenes in the series.

What Doesn’t Work for Breathe: Into the Shadows Season 2?

Storyline

When you look at Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2 in its entirety, you’d think of it as a good show. However, when you break it down, many trivial missteps would come to the fore. For example, imagine a ruthless killer is out on the streets. What’s the first thing the proposition would trigger? I feel it will give rise to fear and tension.

After the general public learns about the Ravan Killer in Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2, the makers had a chance to explore widespread anxiety, which would have lifted the whole experience.

Concept

The idea of split-personality is intriguing but, to be honest, I wasn’t expecting another season of Breathe: Into the Shadows because I felt it would be too repetitive to sustain. And that’s what happens. Everything is the same in the second season. Expect no new conceptual layers.

Final Word

Breathe: Into the Shadows season 2 is a mixed endeavor. If you have watched the first season, you might want to check out the first couple of episodes before going further. On the contrary, if you are new to the franchise, I suggest you try it.
