From the beginning, superhero films have piqued the interest of audiences. The public has always been captivated by the thrill of watching someone with superhuman skills go around battling and saving ordinary individuals.

We’ve all admired superheroes, from the web-shooting Spider-Man to the brooding caped crusader Batman, and secretly desired to be endowed with superpowers.

Indian cinema has also dabbled in this genre several times. We, too, have our fair share of superheroes who can save the world from destruction!

As more and more filmmakers experiment with this genre, the Indian film industry has overcome its history of making stereotypical masala films.

While many of these movies were not successful, several of them have become iconic, providing another muscular, quick-witted superhero for children to idolize.

Here is a list of Indian superhero movies you shouldn’t miss.

Krrish

Krrish became a well-known superhero who gave the masked vigilantes of Hollywood a run for their money.

This was a follow-up to Koi…Mil Gaya, which portrayed the narrative of Rohit Mehra’s father, who was on the verge of contacting extraterrestrial life when he died in an extreme road accident.

Rohit’s mental ability was lowered because of the same vehicle accident. He sustained a brain injury while in his mother’s womb. Years later, Rohit unwittingly summons the aliens using his father’s technology.

He befriends an alien and acquires superpowers because of his friendship. Krrish continues the story with Rohit’s son Krrishna, who inherits his father’s skills and puts them to good use.

Krrish possesses superhuman strength, the ability to leap enormous distances, and flight abilities. The film, directed by Rakesh Roshan, starred Hrithik Roshan and Priyanka Chopra and was a box office smash.

Ra.One

Ra.One is one of Bollywood’s most beloved superhero films, and for a good reason. Director Anubhav Sinha made it feasible for King Khan to portray the role of a superhero. It was a dream come true moment for millions of SRK admirers.

It was one of the most costly superhero films ever made in India, at a budget of Rs 220 crores. Shah Rukh Khan agreed to take on the project, and his production firm, Red Chilies, declined to take on any new projects.

The story follows a computer game character who takes physical form to harm a player who came close to defeating him but stopped the game in the middle.

Many people praised the visual effects in this picture. It even received a national award and a Filmfare award for its technical qualities.

Mr. India

The Anil Kapoor starrer, Mr. India, is still regarded as the best superhero film ever produced in India. Even now, the picture is adored by both young and old.

Shekhar Kapur directed the film, which starred Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, and Amrish Puri. Anil Kapoor plays Arun, a young man who inherits a curious watch constructed by his father that permits him to become invisible to the naked eye until viewed through a red filter.

He uses his newfound abilities to battle criminals and deliver justice to the world. When supervillain Mogambo kidnaps his loved ones, it is up to Arun to save them.

It was the highest-grossing film of 1987, and brought us Mogambo, one of Bollywood’s most famous and scary villains. ‘Mogambo Khush Hua’ remains an iconic dialogue till date.

Robot

Fans of Tamil actor Rajinikanth lauded his 2010 action flick as another masterpiece, but IT professionals were perplexed by the huge growth of the robot Chitti’s behavior.

Other films also contributed to the Rajni craze, but the digital effects in ‘Robot’ were so impressive that they put Indian cinema on par with Hollywood blockbusters.

Minnal Murali

Directed by Basil Joseph, Minnal Murali is a Malayalam Superhero movie. It was not a theatrical release and streamed on Netflix in December 2021.

I hardly had any hopes from this movie, but well, it proved me wrong and worked out to be a compelling watch. The story is set in a village and follows the lives of two men, both largely useless to the community. Another thing they have in common is ‘unrequited’ love.

The meteorological department predicts an event that occurs once in 700 years and includes thunder rumbling and lightning on a large scale. Somehow, the celestial event leads to our two ignored men getting superpowers.

The story is unique because though there are two superheroes, the sequence of events leads one of them to become the villain. Eventually, both stand against each other in the climax.

Bhavesh Joshi Superhero

It is another superhero film capturing a young man. The story follows a common man driven to do the right thing. He challenges everyone who uses illicit means to achieve their goals.

When confronted with barriers posed by corrupt officials, he becomes motivated to bring justice to the fore and undergoes extensive training.

After much trial and error, a vigilante hell-bent on destroying corruption emerges. The film, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Phantom Films, stars Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan Kapoor in the lead role.

These are my all-time favorite Indian superhero movies with a hope of more in coming years. Maybe, the intent is there but a lack of execution spoils the party. Liked reading the blog? Why not subscribe to The Word Street Journal?
