After the success of Brahmastra Part One: Shiva, Ranbir Kapoor is back with his next big film. Also, Pyaar Ka Punchnama fame director Luv Ranjan aims to continue his winning run at the box office with Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.

The film could also prove to be game-changing for Shraddha Kapoor who hasn’t had a huge hit in a long time. Another interesting aspect of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar is the debut of the standup comedian, Anubhav Singh Bassi.

It is a romantic comedy made on a decent budget. Plus, it has been marketed as a modern take on relationships. How good or bad is it?

I will answer all your queries, but not before sharing basic information about the film.

What is the story of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar?

Mickey meets Tinni at his friend’s bachelor party and falls for her instantly. They get into a relationship and decide to take the next big step.

However, it comes at the cost of Tinni’s independence and space, due to which she starts searching for a way to leave him. That’s when the story takes a drastic turn.

Directed by Luv Ranjan, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar stars Ranbir Kapoor (Mickey), Shraddha Kapoor (Tinni), Dimple Kapadia, and Anubhav Singh Bassi (Mannu) in lead roles. Boney Kapoor plays a part in the movie, too.

What’s good about the film?

The idea is commendable. Usually, rom-coms start sounding cliché from the word go. But that doesn’t happen in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar. It somehow stays fresh.

Two strangers meet, and, over time, start liking each other’s company. You must have heard that before. Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar builds on the concept and uses comedy to make it more happening.

Dullness and boredom don’t find a place in the Ranbir Kapoor starrer, thanks to the fast-paced narration. Though it always tries to be funny, the movie only manages to do that intermittently.

Comedy in the latter stage of Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar allows it to get up via punchlines after a sad event or moment. Depicting sorrow is one of the toughest tasks of a romantic comedy.

In Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, you will be immersed in Ranbir’s intense eyes whenever he takes centerstage. Sad scenes are brilliantly aced by the actor, keeping the touch of authenticity alive in a film that rides on high-handed dialogues.

Moreover, the lenses serve some aesthetic brilliance. The cinematography is top-notch, from landscape shots to sudden slow-motion movements.

I won’t lie, the first half dropped my expectations to extremely low levels. Thankfully, and contrary to the usual stuff, Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar bounced back in the second half. Specifically, the last hour of the movie is its best.

The film has emotions that you’d relate to. None of the emotional scenes fail in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar.

Additionally, Luv Ranjan takes a step forward and, finally, showcases the side of the female character. His usual style of storytelling puts the onus of bad omen on the leading lady.

He smartly changes the narrative of Pyaar Ka Punchnama and Sonu Ke Titu ki Sweety and attempts to win over his female audience by giving some space to ‘her’ side of the story.

Another point that caught my attention was the change of rhythm in the ‘Show Me Your Thumka’ song. Ranbir’s heartbroken character wanted to go back to the zone of an estranged lover but the pulse was then picked up by Anubhav Singh Bassi. That was a hard job really well done.

How are the performances?

The film entirely belongs to Ranbir Kapoor despite the presence of Shraddha. He is adept in the art of acting. Talk about situational comedy, punchlines, or the potency during vocal scenes, Ranbir mesmerizes you sumptuously.

In his act, there’s no half-heartedness. Even a simple blink of an eye is intricately displayed. He is far superior to what we saw in Brahmastra: Part One. Ranbir’s handling of the screen is brilliant. The energetic countenance he brings wins you over.

And, the famed Ranbir Kapoor slow-motion distressed walk finds a place in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar after Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Shraddha Kapoor casts a familiar web to impress the audience. She is sweet, charming, and lucrative. Although the funny scenes are a little off, her emotional contours are still unmatched.

I don’t understand why she overdid the assignment on particular occasions, except for the ones where it was required.

Anubhav Singh Bassi’s casting is like a two-edged sword. He is usually good in the limited space he gets, but I found him swimming in the zone of stand-up comedy, where one has to show regard to the camera.

While acting, you have to avoid the shutter completely. Bassi, on the other hand, couldn’t do that. He seemed a little too bothered by the reel than the other characters. Expressions don’t find a place on his rock-solid face.

What Doesn’t Work for Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar?

It is stuffed with monologues. The movie simply takes away the charm of flawless speech by assigning at least one to each character.

Add to it the heavy dialogues in the first half. Luv Ranjan probably wanted to mix generational styles while showing romance, giving the impression that he has something to offer to everybody.

Maybe, the pretentious dialogues took a toll on free-flowing scenes.

Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar has a massive logical flaw. It beats my mind how can someone regularly talking to their partner over the phone is unable to recognize their voice?

There are no pitch changes, voice modulations, etc., and even then, two people madly in love cannot grasp each other’s sound.

Furthermore, the wrong spelling of ‘Received,’ and the uncalled-for sound of the early morning rooster add to the movie’s woes.

Should you watch Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar?

There will be questions while you watch the film and after you finish it. Who was wrong? The boy, the girl, or the family?

What interests me is at least you’d be able to have an individual opinion. Therefore, I would give it a go.
