A Hard and Soft (scanned) Copy of Your Passport

Post the pandemic, it has become crucial for travelers to carry a scanned copy of their passports along with the hard copy. It not only makes your travel easier but also safer. In case of unfortunate incidents like theft or forgetfulness, the scanned copy can save you a lot of trouble.

Before you step out of your home, ensure you carry your original passport in your bag and 3-4 copies. Also, do not forget to keep them in several places. You can leave one copy at home with your friends or family, one in your luggage bag, one in your handbag, and one with your co-traveler.

I am telling you from a personal experience that losing your passport can be the biggest nightmare in the world, and you don’t want to experience that. Also, it’s always a good idea to protect your passport using a waterproof cover to prevent the pages from getting damaged.

Portable Phone Charger/Power Bank

Gone are the days when we carried only the physical copies of our flight/train tickets, their accommodation proof, or the details of their cab/taxi service. Thanks to the newly introduced web check-in, you can now download your boarding pass on your phone and use it during the airport protocols.

Nowadays, everyone keeps their tickets, accommodation screenshots, and even their taxi details saved on their smartphones. But what if you run out of battery at the wrong time? What if you are not carrying the physical copies of your boarding pass or tickets? Believe me, it is scarier than it sounds.

To avoid such a disaster, always have a portable phone charger (power bank) with you in your travel bag. It will make your journey more peaceful and safe and give you the freedom to work from the airport or train station.

Moreover, you can click as many photos as you want to, extend the remote work sessions, and, most importantly, use Google maps in a new place so you don’t get lost. A power bank helps you stay entertained while waiting at different stations and enables you to stay connected with your loved ones.

Trekking/Walking/Running Shoes

It doesn’t matter if you are going for a leisure trip, family trip, adventurous trip, or even your honeymoon. Keeping a pair of trekking or walking shoes is vital to ensure your journey is comfortable. To save space in your travel bag, it’s best to wear your boots with your airport outfit.

Walking around the airport can be quite troublesome if you are not wearing comfortable shoes. Apart from comfort, they also look very stylish. The best part about keeping walking/trekking shoes is that they complement every outfit and can be worn during the day as well as the night.

Another advantage of carrying trekking or running shoes is that they can help you exercise to get rid of that awful jet lag that can be both a trip and a mood spoiler.

Medical Kit

You don’t want to run out on your prescribed medications and spend a lot of money purchasing them from the airport or a different country altogether. Medicines abroad can be more expensive than you think. Always carry a medical kit with all your emergency and prescribed drugs for a safe and healthy trip.

Make a list of all the medicines (nausea, fever, stomach, painkillers) that you may need during your trip, and ensure that you place them in your handbag in case of any emergency. Many people often forget to keep their medication while leaving it for the last minute packing.

However, that’s where you go wrong. It should technically be the first thing you should pack in your travel bag. Also, don’t forget to keep a first-aid kit in case you meet with an accident or hurt yourself during a trek or adventure activity.

Last But Not Least, Clothes

Now here’s a tricky one. No, not because you have to keep your clothes, but because you have to choose which ones to keep and which to drop. You may have bought those dresses, shorts, or jeans for your trip, but it’s always good to introspect and ask yourself if you will really need them.

We, Indians, are known for carrying two bags for a 2-day trip when only one bag can easily do. So don’t repeat the mistakes I have made. It’s always a good idea to travel light. Make sure you are only carrying the clothes you will 100% need. And don’t forget to keep your intimate wear like your undergarments.

And when packing, always think about packing smart and not packing hard. Make sure you roll your clothes while placing them in the bag rather than folding them. This will save a lot of space for you to adjust other important things like your shoes, laptop charger, and toiletries, amongst other essentials.

Also, don’t forget to mark your bag as fragile even if it doesn’t contain anything fragile. This will ensure that your bag will be taken care of by the airport authorities and get the top place in the storage. This also saves a lot of money since you don’t have to pay anything ‘extra’ for them to keep your belongings safe.

Final Takeaway

Traveling can give you unforgettable experiences for life. It changes your perspective, makes you face your fears, and brings out the best version of you. But to have these experiences, you must learn how to travel smart. It does not matter if you travel solo or with a group; you should always trust and follow your instincts.

Adventure is good, but it is not more important than your safety. So travel light, travel smart, and experience something new each time you head off on an expedition. However, please ensure that it’s not a story of how you lost your passport in a foreign land (pun intended).
