I have not watched Game of Thrones. But I cannot deny its popularity globally. Now, the creators of the iconic show have come up with another series, 3 Body Problem.
Based on the books by Cixin Liu, it is a Sci-Fi, cerebral, and mind-bending show.
However, it is not the first show based on the same original material. There have been other films and series (at least 2) in the past.
With 8 episodes in its kitty, it runs for over seven hours.
3 Body Problem Synopsis
When agencies find out an alien tribe is headed toward the Earth, a panic-riddled international community must find a common way to save the planet.
It is created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo. The series features Jess Hong (Jin), Liam Cunningham (Wade), Eiza Gonzalez (Auggie), Jovan Adepo (Saul), Jonathan Pryce, Benedict Wong (Da Shi), Alex Sharp (Will), Rosalind Chao (Ye Winjie), and others.
What Works for 3 Body Problem?
Matching the conceptual prowess of American creators, especially in the Sci-fi genre, is difficult.
3 Body Problem, though having its roots in a novel, is another idea that beats the previous milestones set by the country.
However, suddenly I am seeing a shift from Time travel or different dimensional stories to ones that focus on aliens.
Only recently, The Signal (German) explored the theme and now 3 Body Problem has entered the arena.
Five highly qualified friends find themselves linked to a peculiar phenomenon that astounds physicists across the globe. With origins in China’s cultural revolution, will it bring doomsday?
It starts off as a scintillating tale, invigorating you at every level. A sense of creative captivation marks a spell.
The intriguing storyline blends suspense with the thrill of impending doom. As with most Sci-fi tales, 3 Body Problem also brings into play the notion of the human race being in danger.
But the reasoning and its initialization are of the essence. The makers prepare the base meticulously before going into flashy aspects.
Some cliffhangers are placed nicely at the right moments to evoke curiosity.
Moreover, I feel the mysterious unfolding of events enhances the magnetic allure of the series.
The emotional bond is pretty strong as well with friendship taking the lead over romance.
Occasionally, 3 Body Problem comes across as a fiery show. The cosmological ambiance enhances its appeal, splendidly complemented by quality video effects.
It succeeds in holding your unparalleled attention. The background score elevates the show quite well.
Never would you feel the story rushing through details. Despite being high on mystery, it’s also calming and soothing at the same time.
How are the Performances?
Jess Hong plays a key role in the show. She hits the right expressional acuity while emoting properly for the camera.
Her fragility steers the series well. The way she tackles dire scenes allows the series to conquer some of its misfiring aspects.
Eiza Gonzalez greatly influences the narrative through her esteemed outing. Every furious face she makes accentuates and strengthens one of its creative dimensions.
Liam Cunningham as Wade plays the stern chief of a task force. He is that rude leader who doesn’t give a damn about anything but his goals. His strict mien catapults 3 Body Problem, making it more satiable.
Benedict Wong as Da Shi is a gritty cop in the series. Deadpan, fierce, and authentically brilliant, Wong redefines the aura of police officers.
Jovan Adepo plays Saul in the show. He has a very calm, casual presence. He is not the usual humorous guy you’d see on the screen.
There is a touch of rawness, which gives the required lever to 3 Body Problem.
Alex Sharp and John Bradley earnestly move ahead in their respective roles. Their convincing acts stop the show from entering a hollow realm.
What Doesn’t Work for 3 Body Problem?
There are pacing concerns regarding the series. It gets a tad too slow trying to present an authentic setup.
I felt the music could have been better.
None of the songs make a deep impact. Lastly, the final episode of 3 Body Problem is underwhelming.
It fails to live up to the expectations set by the previous seven episodes.
Stream or Skip?
Go for it. 3 Body Problem is a stimulating series. Its positives far outweigh the negatives.
