Shaitaan (2024) Ending Explained: Did Vanraj Die? Why Kabir Cut His Tongue? Why Was Vanraj Captured?

Vikas Bahl’s latest film, starring Ajay Devgn and R Madhavan in lead roles, has found acceptance among the audiences.

Shaitaan is a supernatural thriller with breathtaking twists and turns.

The movie’s ending might be a bit hard to catch up for some. Hence, I have brought an ending explanation of the last thirty minutes of Shaitaan.

The starting point of the blog is when Jahnvi throws Dhruv from the terrace and Kabir fails to save him from falling.

Shaitaan Detailed Ending Explained

Kabir and Jyoti are forced to pledge their daughter to Vanraj so that he allows them to take Dhruv to the hospital.

Vanraj smiles, thanks them, and steps out of their premises with Jahnvi.

Kabir puts Dhruv inside his car while Jyoti sits in the driver’s seat to take him to the hospital.

Dhruv, soaked in blood, and in severe pain, asks his dad to bring back his sister. Kabir is teary-eyed, and so is Jyoti.

He goes back inside his house and dresses his injured left hand but doesn’t take out the knife.

Kabir then rides a bicycle to go out in search of his daughter.

Vanraj takes Jahnvi into a forest and deep inside, they come across a girl who is swinging back and forth on the swing.

He laughs at her and tells her to stop since she has been doing the same for so many days.

It is apparent that Vanraj must have previously ordered her to keep swinging for an indefinite period.

She immediately jumps off the swing seat.

Having been doing it for several days, she finds it hard to stand up straight and only manages to crawl on the ground.

One by one, several girls join Vanraj and Jahnvi.

He takes them to a barren, old fort, near which other girls are already involved in minor chores.

He announces that all of them will be freed tonight, quickly receiving a unanimous mandate from them.

Vanraj has a wide smile on his face, plus he is excited as he enters the fort with his tribe.

Kabir goes to Shyam’s house, the caretaker of his holiday home.

He tries to wake him up from his sleep, but when he doesn’t, he takes his phone from his pocket and opens ‘maps’ in it.

How Did Kabir Get Vanraj’s Location?

Earlier in the movie, when Vanraj went to sleep, he asked Jahnvi to guard him.

Kabir had tried to come and take Vanraj’s mobile but his daughter didn’t allow him to do so.

He went back to the room and decided to do it the other way by climbing down through the window.

This was the time when Jyoti attacked Vanraj with a knife. Therefore, a lot of clamor was already going on inside the hall, which helped Kabir.

The sound of his adventurous fall couldn’t reach Jahnvi or Vanraj.

He sneaked inside the house and got hold of Vanraj’s mobile phone. Kabir then used his memory to remember his pattern lock from the restaurant and unlocked it.

He shared his live location with Shyam, which is why he went to see him in the night.

Kabir takes his phone and gets back on the trail using Vanraj’s live location. This time, he uses Shyam’s motorcycle instead of his bicycle.

On the other hand, preparations begin at Vanraj’s den for a grand ceremony. He changes his outfit, helped by the girls in his custody.

Donning a black dress, Vanraj looks like an experienced black magic occultist.

The girls prepare a huge subterranean fire and gather around it in a semi-circle. Vanraj takes the lead and asks if they want to be freed.

The girls reply in unison.

He then picks a black doll from a concrete bowl full of them and instructs the girls to move towards the fire when he throws the black doll inside it and finally jump into it themselves when he lobs the only red doll.

Vanraj starts chanting mantras and throws the black dolls one by one. Following his directions, the captive girls step forward with every toss.

His animated act exudes an undercurrent of dark energy.

Kabir reaches a narrow pathway going through the jungle. He pauses for a while to confirm the location.

Suddenly, unknown women attack him, assumably part of Vanraj’s cult. He falls off the bike and tumbles down onto the ground.

The women continuously land blows at Kabir. It takes a lot of effort for him to fight them off. Once he does, Kabir finds his way to Vanraj’s fort.

He is shocked to see a large group of girls dancing to his tunes, while he throws dolls into a subterranean fire.

Vanraj notices him and starts laughing. As they share a look, a woman smashes Kabir’s head with a wooden stick and he collapses but remains conscious.

Vanraj asks his compatriots to bring him aboard. The women throw Kabir at his feet.

After a pitiful laugh, Vanraj calls him the ‘father of the year,’ who never gives up.

He tells him that he shouldn’t have come here since all the girls are strictly instructed to eat the flesh of any individual who tries to attack their master, Vanraj.

He continues in the same breath that he is not a bad guy.

God did everything right but only committed the mistake of making everybody their own master.

Even those who didn’t deserve it. Tonight, Vanraj is going to fix that mistake by finishing his ‘Yajna.’

After the girls willfully jump into the fire and sacrifice their lives, he won’t need a ‘sweet’ or any other eatable to control the souls of others.

He can be everybody’s master just by looking at them. The whole world will be under his control.

Vanraj then starts laughing wildly and resumes his Yajna, by throwing the remaining dolls into the fire pit.

When the black dolls are finished and he is about to toss the final red doll, Kabir picks a burning wooden stick and smashes it on his leg.

Vanraj screams in pain and the doll falls from his hand, which is then caught by Kabir.

Screaming in pain, Vanraj plunges downward and Kabir uses the knife stuck in his hand to slash his tongue.

Blood spills out from Vanraj’s mouth and he falls down the stairs, traumatized after losing his tongue.

He tries to speak and give directions to the girls but fails to do so. Kabir throws the tongue into the fire.

Seeing their master down and following his ‘strict instructions,’ all the girls move toward him to eat him alive.

However, the final part of Kabir’s plan saves him. He plays a recording in Dhruv’s audio equipment.

The voice sample contains Vanraj’s voice, which says “You smile like before. You become normal like before. And I will liberate you permanently.”

It makes the women retreat and stop attacking Kabir.

How did Kabir Get Vanraj’s Voice Sample?

Dhruv was enthusiastic about music. He would play with audio tools and knew how to handle them.

After Jahnvi had smashed his head on the orders of Vanraj, Kabir went to look after him in the room.

His eyes accidentally struck his audio recorder and he asked for Dhruv’s help in setting it up.

Thereafter, he carried the tool with him while climbing down the window.

During his physical brawl with Vanraj in the hall, the latter tried to mock him by telling Jahnvi, “your dad wants you to smile like before, get back to normalcy, and I will free you forever,” among other things.

Kabir uses his laptop to trim this specific part when he goes inside the house after Jyoti leaves for the hospital.

The scene cuts to the fort, where the girls are slowly getting back to their senses upon hearing Vanraj’s recorded directions.

Soon, their minds are liberated. In an emotional moment, Kabir hugs Jahnvi, having snatched her daughter back from the devil.

Every girl in the castle regains her senses.

We are then shown a hospital scene with Kabir on the bed.

A female police officer walks inside his room and thanks Kabir for his valuable efforts. She informs him that they rescued 108 girls from the place.

Their families had filed missing reports but since the police couldn’t find them, they were thought to have died.

Intermittent scenes of cops bringing the girls to their homes make the ambiance emotional. Kabir asks the officer about Vanraj’s whereabouts.

She replies saying that they are still searching for him and he will be nabbed soon.

Kabir cautions her that he is a dangerous man and needs to be caught as soon as possible.

The cop leaves the room and Jahnvi hugs his father. We also see Jyoti by Dhruv’s side on another bed.

The frame turns black and the movie takes a leap of one year. Kabir, dressed in formals, picks up a dead rat from a jungle.

We then see him stepping down the stairs in a minutely lit basement. A seemingly old and dilapidated Vanraj is sitting on the floor.

His hands are chained and his face is covered in beard. Kabir throws the rat in front of him along with an open box, probably of tea leaves (chaipatti).

Vanraj puts the rat aside and instead asks for the Banana he is holding.

When Kabir turns around, Vanraj mumbles his name (he has no tongue). He pleads through his eyes for the Banana but Kabir drops it in the pile of trash before seating himself on the chair.

Kabir lights a cigarette and observes that ‘god’ will not eat today as well. He refers to Vanraj as God and himself as an ordinary man.

Kabir further says that when an ordinary man becomes a father, he becomes God for his children. A father goes through all the hardships to keep his kids safe.

They become his world. Vanraj wanted to snatch his world from a father (Jahnvi from him). He did all of it for ‘power.’

But if he wants to learn the real meaning of the word, he should see a mother fight for her child.

There is no god more powerful than a mother in this whole universe. He puts the cigarette down and walks towards Vanraj to tell him that he will now rot in this place forever.

His life will become a living hell. He leaves the place after saying he will meet him tomorrow.

As he exits and darkness overtakes the underground shed, a helpless Vanraj keeps begging for his life, but cannot utter a single word clearly.

The voice he used to control innocent girls is no longer there to even plead for mercy.

A punishment worse than dying.

Why did He Bring him Tea Leaves?

Kabir brought a box of tea leaves for Vanraj because he had made Jahnvi eat tea leaves earlier in the film.

It was a form of sweet revenge from a dad for his daughter.

Why did Kabir Cut Vanraj’s Tongue?

Vanraj used to control the girls with his voice.

Even if Kabir had killed him, his subject would follow the last direction given by him till her final breath.

There was simply no way to stop Vanraj. If anyone had taped his mouth, even then he would get ample to time to direct his disciple.

In this context, the only way to end his hegemony was by stopping him from speaking. Kabir did this by cutting his tongue.

No tongue meant no voice and hence, no directions. If Kabir didn’t have the voice recording, the girls would have killed him since Vanraj had given them prior orders.

How Did Vanraj Control the Girls? What was his power?

Vanraj used to do black magic. Like most movies, Shaitaan also doesn’t explore his powers in detail.

The source and origin of his abilities are not discussed at any point in time.

However, assumably, Vanraj practiced black magic for his whole life and found a way to control others.

What Happened to Vanraj? Did Vanraj Die?

No, Vanraj didn’t die. After Kabir slashed his tongue in the jungle, he sneaked out of the place along with Vanraj and Jahnvi before calling the cops.

He later told the police that Vanraj managed to escape. However, in reality, Vanraj is still alive and held captive by Kabir in an unknown basement.

The police, unaware of Kabir’s antics are still looking for him. But the real question is…

Why Kabir Captured Vanraj?

After 108 girls were freed from Vanraj’s evil spell, the best thing for Kabir was to give him to the cops.

However, he instead took him to a desolate underground place and held him captive. Kabir did this to avenge the pain and trauma inflicted upon his family by Vanraj.

Moreover, he egoistically called himself God. Kabir showed him his place by making him suffer for even a mere Banana.

If he was God or a human beyond the normal being, he could have saved himself.

It is easier to trust the second reason. But the agony he went through because of what Vanraj did to his family, both mentally and physically, was the real reason behind Kabir’s actions.

Where Will Shaitaan Stream on OTT?

Shaitaan will stream on Netflix.

Who is Shaitaan? Vanraj or Kabir?

In literal terms, Vanraj is the real devil or ‘shaitaan.’ However, in the end, Kabir says, ‘he is Vanraj’s shaitaan.’

This is because he now has him under his control.

Will There Be Shaitaan Part 2?

Well, Vanraj is alive and so is Kabir. So, a second part is possible. But another between these two would become repetitive.

Moreover, Shaitaan is not an original story. It is inspired by a Gujarati film, which only has one part.

For Shaitaan Part 2, there has to be a Vash part 2 first, which seems unlikely.

As of now, the makers of Shaitaan have not announced any sequels.
