Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon, two heartthrobs of young Indian audiences, have come together for the first time on the big screen.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is the latest Hindi Romcom to hit the big screen. While Kapoor is coming on the back of Jersey (theatrical), Kriti’s last film was Ganapath

Both were, unfortunately, on the southern side of things.

Will the latest flick, which runs for a bit over two hours, be able to change their fortunes? Here is my review.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya Synopsis

The film is about an impossible love story of a guy who falls for a robot in human form. Can he introduce the girl to his family and marry her eventually, without letting the secret slip out?

Directed by Amit Joshi, it stars Shahid Kapoor (Aryan), Kriti Sanon (SIFRA), Dimple Kapadia (Urmila), Ashish Verma, Rakesh Bedi, Dharmendra, and Rajesh Kumar, among others.

What Works for Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya?

The film solely rides on its offbeat concept. While we have seen someone falling in love with a robot as part of a bigger story, it has rarely been the fundamental idea.

Aryan, a robotics engineer, travels to America to see her aunt, who runs a tech firm, specializing in developing robots.

There, he meets SIFRA and falls in love with her. However, it is only later that he realizes she is a robot.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya rightly counts on this wild on-paper premise to guide it through the audience’s heart.

The movie puts a specious face upfront that works as an exciting setup, specifically in the Indian context.

It then laces the narrative with punchlines, situational humor, and family dynamics to further the hold.

The storyline matures with time and gets better as it reaches the interval block.

The final 20-25 minutes of the movie trigger a laughter riot and allow it to regain the lost ground from the first half.

Largely, TBMAUJ’s light-hearted ambiance works as the glue. It allows you the time to get acquainted with the plot.

After all, it has been some time since Hindi viewers witnessed a casual romcom in theaters.

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya makes you laugh, as promised, mostly in the second half.

The film’s attempts at situational comedy work far better than jokes and punchlines. Just imagine putting a robotic daughter-in-law inside an Indian family; it is a goldmine of fun.

And if you wondering whether TBMAUJ flourishes in the romance department, it does. Shahid and Kriti’s pairing has its charm, though not entirely flawless.

Furthermore, the title track’s usage as an intermittent background score enhances the musical impact of the movie.

A special mention to Shahid Kapoor’s dancing skills.

He single-handedly powers Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya through his ecstatic screen presence during dance numbers.

How are the Performances?

Shahid Kapoor plays Aryan in the movie. His last comedy role came in the 2018 release Batti Gul Meter Chalu

The actor has always had a knack for expressional sarcasm, which then translates into a quirky yet natural dialogue delivery.

In Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, he uses this trait for the whole duration to spring laughter.

Kapoor’s comic timing is nice but you might occasionally feel he is let down by lame writing, especially punches.

Kriti Sanon portrays SIFRA and excels in the role. The character demanded her to make adjustments because of its superficial nature.

Sanon masterfully gives effect to the overhaul she needs to go through. Her presence is alluring an almost deadpan demeanor works to her benefit.

Dimple Kapadia charms you with her dynamic portrayal in TBMAUJ. Her experienced aura allows the legendary actress to adapt and express herself naturally.

Everybody else has done a great job in the movie.

What Doesn’t Work for Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya?

The film starts fairly poorly, making failed attempts at generating laughter. Neither the one-liners nor the intended jokes achieve the desired impact.

It cannot properly utilize the idea. As I said earlier, such an offbeat concept is a goldmine of fun. However, TBMAUJ cannot throw in the required finesse.

Yes, it tickles you but only intermittently. The writing never goes deep or wide to include scenes that could have made the movie achieve a status of brilliance.

Even the sober dialogues are mostly flat. Conversations are never engaging or fully captivating.

Moreover, a consistent spark is absent from Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya’s screenplay. Some of the segments appear deliberative and ostentatious, thereby taking away the genuineness.

The whole purpose of the movie is to put certain individuals in specific situations so that the script can play out.

And that is not the problem. The issue is the makers are too pretentious while doing so.

Watch or Not?

Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya is recommended only if you are seeking a light-hearted pastime entertainer.

It is not a fully-packed, bone tickling comedy film.
