Ever since the release of GyeongSeong Creature, a Netflix show of Korean origin, many of us have been wondering about a unique term called ‘Najin.’
It was first mentioned in the series’ initial episode. But the makers only revealed its origins in the eighth episode of the show.
I could have come up with a long post before as well, just to gain clickbait traffic.
However, I realized it was better to wait for something concrete to come out from the story itself before jumping to my own conclusions.
And that has finally happened. The second part of GyeongSeong Creature reveals the origins of the Najin and the main objective behind creating the ‘Creature’ in the Korean show.
Read on to know more.
Please note that nothing in this blog is related to real life. It is all fiction, as shown in GyeongSeong Creature, a Netflix series.
This blog contains SPOILERS. Don’t read ahead if you have yet to watch GyeongSeong Creature.
What is Najin?
Najin is a parasite, which was discovered deep in the glaciers of the Muryong mountains. The parasite latches onto the brain of its host and mutates into a monster.
It doesn’t have a brain of its own. Instead, the Najin uses the human brain to turn the host into a predator.
Moreover, the parasite doesn’t alter the outer appearance of the individual it takes over. If someone is injected with Najin alone, they will retain their human look but have the predatory powers of a monster.
Why Does the Creature Kill People Mercilessly?
In order to survive, the Najin controls the host from the inside using the human brain. It hunts anyone with a brain and specifically attacks the cerebrum part of the head.
The Najin is highly aggressive and more violent than most apex predators. It can analyze situations quickly and heal its wounds almost immediately.
However, none of it is possible if the Najin is not accompanied by a human brain.
Now, the big question is…
Why did Seishin look disfigured if Najin retains the human appearance? Why Did the Creature Look Like a Monster? What Gives it the Gruesome Figure?
It was because Seishin was given two injections. While one serum had Najin, the other was combined with Anthrax.
The anthrax serum mutates with the Najin parasite to change the human form. In other words, Najin gives the power and Anthrax serum gives the power an equally sturdy outlook.
Had it only been Najin, Seishin would have retained her face.
Why Myeong-ja Didn’t Turn into a Monstrous Creature?
Interestingly, her case is the exact opposite of Seishin’s. Myeong-ja drank the Najin serum kept inside the lab on her own.
Her body did not receive the Anthrax serum and hence, she retained the human face, unlike Seishin.
She got all the powers except for the huge outer look.
How Was the Najin Discovered?
Kato explains that the Japanese army conducted various experiments and research on the limitations of the human anatomy.
It was during one of these experiments that they came upon the Najin parasite, purely by chance.
Kato gives the example of Penicillium, which was also discovered accidentally during an experiment.
Therefore, Najin was just a chance discovery in GyeongSeong Creature.
What are the Weaknesses of Najin?
With predatory powers come downsides as well. The Najin parasite has three of them:
Nitrogen, sunlight, and fire.
Was Najin Used by the Japanese Army in Reality? Is Najin Real?
No, it was never used in real life.
The makers of GyeongSeong Creature use the retro, black-and-white effect with ancient-looking footage to make the explanation more realistic.
However, it is all a fictional theory and there is no historical proof that Najin or something like Najin was created by the Japanese army.
I understand the hints the makers try to give throughout the end narration. Still, without historical proof, it wouldn’t be factually correct to say it happened.
What was the goal behind creating the Monster in GyeongSeong Creature?
In the ninth episode, Lieutenant Kato says that the main goal behind creating a monstrous creature was to change the course of human history.
The Japanese army saw it as a weapon against the world.
The Najin parasite will evolve humans, creating a new world, never seen before.
It would regenerate to develop a new class of individuals that can be used against enemies and also to wipe out thousands in one go.
As you must have seen, Myeong-ja’s newborn child has the Najin parasite because his mother had the same.
Also, Seishin transmits the parasite into Yoon Chae-ok to keep her alive. Therefore, Najin can evolve and the makers have shown how.
Moreover, another amazing thing about Najin is its healing properties. Come what may, it can heal its wounds within seconds.
Are Muryong Mountains Real?
In South Korea, there are several mountains that have ‘Muryong’ in their name. One of them is ‘Muryongsan’ in Ulsan while another is the ‘Muryong Peak’ in the Deokyu Mountains.
